About the Old Schoolhouse
The Old Schoolhouse in the hamlet of Newburn, East Neuk of Fife, enjoys an unparalleled tranquil setting with views to the Firth of Forth, surrounded by fields and woodland. Built in the 17th Century and extended at various times since, the house has a fascinating history as a schoolhouse, but is now a comfortably elegant home with 21st century facilities, perfect for your next retreat.
The historic and atmospheric town of St Andrews is just 15 minutes drive away, and Edinburgh just under an hour away. The scenic Fife Coastal Path runs just a kilometre from the house and the fishing villages and beaches of the East Neuk are all close by.
The house boasts 7 bedrooms over 2 floors and can sleep 11/12 people comfortably. Many of the bedrooms have views over the fields to the Firth of Forth and East Lothian beyond. A large and welcoming kitchen is at the heart of the house, with 2 beautiful reception rooms available to guests for relaxation and conviviality. What makes this house special though is the original school room with its large windows and high ceilings – a perfect space for yoga, pilates, group classes or even an art studio. There is a large garden with an orchard that can also be used for various activities and many spots ideal for al fresco meals and enjoying the famous East Neuk sunshine!
Retreats can be booked on a self-catering basis, however we would be delighted to fully host you and your guests so you can all relax and enjoy everything the house has to offer – all cleaning and delicious home cooked meals included.
The rooms
With its high ceilings, large sash windows and comfortable furniture this light-filled sitting room is the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee or pre-dinner drinks in front of the cosy log burner.
One of the original 17th century rooms, the drawing room is an elegant space with a beautiful fireplace. Perfect for one to one meetings and smaller social gatherings.
This room dates from the 19th century when the house became the village school and continued to educate local children up until the late 1970s! It is now a multi-use space perfect as a yoga/pilates studio, art studio, events or meeting space.
This spacious room is very much the heart of the Old Schoolhouse and where you can enjoy nutritious, home cooked meals provided by your host Meredith. The large table seats up to 12 people.
The elegant master bedroom suite enjoys stunning views, a large ensuite bathroom with bath and separate shower and a superking sized bed.
The pink bedroom has large dual aspect windows and a pretty bathroom (bath with shower over) that can either be kept as an en-suite or a jack and jill bathroom with one of the other principal bedrooms.
The blue bedroom can be set out as either a twin room or with a superking sized bed.
The twin room enjoys a view over woodland to the rear of the house.
One of the prettiest rooms in the house, this single room also has one of the best views!
There are potentially two bathrooms on this floor (both with baths and showers over) available for these rooms. There is also a large shower room on the ground floor available for all guests
On the third floor of the house are two single bedrooms sharing a bathroom with shower.
All our comfortable bedrooms enjoy the benefit of high quality linens, dressing gowns, slippers, fresh flowers and we provide locally sourced toiletries in all the bathrooms.
About the host
Meredith bought The Old Schoolhouse two years ago as a holiday home for her family, whilst also recognising the potential the house has as a venue for retreats and events. Having had a professional background in PR and events, Meredith is happiest when the house is full of people enjoying her welcoming and relaxed style of hospitality. A highly experienced cook, Meredith loves to create seasonal and nutritious meals with the wonderful produce Fife has to offer.
